Maundy Thursday remembers Jesus’ last meal with his disciples before going to the cross and when he encouraged them to be people who “love one another.” They shared food, drink and conversation as they celebrated the Jewish holiday, Passover, together.
In that spirit, we would like to do the same.Gathering in one another’s homes for a simple meal on Thursday, April 6, and to enjoy the company of one another.
Simple is the operating principle. The point is to get to know one another without expectations of a big dinner party. Something life-giving that is doable and that you may repeat down the road! Think of it as a 3-6-9 event.
3 is for 30. Choose a meal that takes under 30 minutes to prepare and share the provision of food. For instance, a host could make a pot of soup and other parties could bring salad, bread, dessert and beverages.
6 is for 60. Spend no more than 60 minutes tidying your house. Really. We know, for some (maybe most!) of us that feels like not nearly enough time. Take a deep breath, release perfection and try on a come-as-you-are-you-are-to-my-house-as-it-is-family-vibe.
9 is for 90. Spend 90 minutes together eating, getting to know each other, sharing the evening. It is a weeknight so we know that folks need to get rest for work and other commitments. We provide some ideas for discussion questions and connection.
If you would like to host, you can invite some folks you know from Union and/or who live in your neighborhood (we’d be happy to assist you if you want help with that or are open to have us fill your table). Just let us know how many Union friends you want to host. Also, let us know if you want a family friendly group.
If you are signing up as an attendee, please mark how many in your family and your neighborhood.
